Our Release A Monster Program

Release a 250 lb halibut or larger and your fishing trip is free!

Alaska is home to 75% of the Pacific Halibut Caught in the world. The waters surrounding Homer are considered the halibut capital of the world due to the number of pounds of halibut caught in these waters each year. In most years, Homer typically brings in more Halibut in both the sport fishery and commercial fishery than any other major port in Alaska. This includes Seward, Kodiak, Valdez, Cordova, Dutch Harbor and more. The beauty of Kachemak Bay combined with an excellent halibut fishery makes for one of the best fishing experiences anywhere in the world.

Halibut Size Matters

Any halibut larger than 3 feet or 36 inches is most likely a female. This is a fish in the 20-25 lb category. If it’s any bigger than this it’s most certainly a female. Female halibut reach sexual maturity at the age of 12 while males reach sexual maturity at the age of 8. These fish can be as much as 55 years old. The larger the halibut it the more eggs it produces. A 50 lb halibut will produce around 500,000 eggs while a 250 lb halibut can produce as many as 4,000,000 eggs!
