Homer Halibut Hunters has several different halibut fishing trips to choose from when it comes to targeting halibut. These include single species 3/4-day and full-day trips, combo trips, trophy halibut trips, and the ultimate triple threat which includes halibut, rockfish, and salmon.
Our Fishing Grounds
Not surprisingly, knowing where to fish is where it all begins. We are so fortunate to have such a massive and fertile fishing area at nearly 4,500 square miles. The fishing grounds begin almost as soon as we leave the Homer harbor extending as far north as Ninilchik and as far south as the Barren Islands.
These waters are home to millions of halibut, rockfish, lingcod, shark, Octopus, Skates, and more.
Where we fish depends on the type of trip we’re taking that day, previous days fishing quality, and of course, we always keep a mindful eye on the weather. But, the entirety of the area in red are areas we might fish on your trip.

3/4-Day Halibut Fishing Trips
Our 3/4-day halibut fishing trips are such a great way to get that Alaska halibut fishing experience without committing to a big full-day long day of fishing. This is also a great trip for those that might be concerned about getting a bit seasick. These are also great family trips with younger anglers. This is also a great trip as we meet at 7:30 AM and depart at 8:00 AM so it leaves one hour later than our other trips.
These trips are around 6-7 hours in duration. This is a perfect trip for folks with limited time, families with younger anglers, or those that are worried about getting seasick.
We generally stay inside the more protected waters of Kachemak Bay and the ride to our fishing grounds for these trips only takes between 30 and 45 minutes. While we are not targeting particularly large halibut sometimes we still catch triple digit fish but the average fish is probably in the 20 lb range.
Also, even though this is a single species halibut trip, we often catch a fair amount of pacific cod which is a great eating fish and the 2nd largest commercial fishery in Alaska. You definitely want to take some of this home!
Full-Day Halibut Fishing Trips
Our full-day halibut fishing trips check-in time is at 6:30 AM for a 7:00 AM departure. After a safety briefing, license check, and vessel orientation, we’ll be on our way!
The ride to our fishing grounds will be anywhere from 45 to 90 minutes but can be as much as 2 hours if the water is good and we decide to “go big!” We’ll discuss these options with you. Our goal is to provide you with the best halibut fishing experience you could possibly have! The trip out to the fishing grounds can be quite spectacular as we travel fairly close to the shoreline. It’s not uncommon to spot bears along the shoreline and we often see otters, whales, seals, puffins, eagles, and countless varieties of other birds.
Our crew and deckhand will be helping out the entire time. We’ll bait hooks, teach you how to get the rigs on the bottom, how to identify strikes, when to check bait, and other fishing techniques.
Somedays if we get into the perfect spot we may fish only that one spot. Other days we may need to try several. Catching limits of halibut is typically the norm. Regulations require one of the halibut to be under 32″ in length – we call this the little one. Catching the little one is usually harder than catching the one of any size. That’s a good problem to have!
