Homer Halibut Hunters offers fantastic world-class Alaska saltwater fishing adventures for halibut, salmon, rockfish, and lingcod.

Homer Halibut Hunters takes great pride in the quality of our boats, our crew, and our professionalism. We provide a variety of day trips, multi-species, trips, shorter excursions, and even long range trophy trips.

One of the great things about fishing the fertile waters of Alaska is you never know exactly what you’re going to reel up. Halibut of all sizes, Great Alaska Skates, octopus, yelloweye and many other species of rockfish are all possibilities.

95% of all Pacific Halibut are caught in the waters of Alaska. And, of all the halibut caught in Alaska, the waters surrounding Kachemak Bay delivery more halibut than any other port. On a typical year, Homer brings in approximately 2.5 million pounds of halibut compared to 2 million pounds each in Kodiak and Seward which is why Homer has the title of the halibut fishing capital of the world.

Our Fleet

Our boats are named after Orion the Hunter and Scorpio the scorpion. Greek mythology says that Orion The Hunter drew the ire of Gaia the goddess of Earth who sent Scorpio the giant scorpion to kill Orion. It was an amazing contest that was witnessed by Zues and Artemis. They were so impressed by the battle that both contestants were raised to the heavens in honor of their great battle.

Orion and Scorpio are two of the finest boats you’ll find in Homer. Each is incredibly spacious, comfortable, fast, and capable of long distance runs. With twin 250HP outboard engines these boats are incredibly fast. And at 32′ and 35′ in overall length, active

The number of guests on these boats to 6 people ensuring you’ll have a first-class experience, personalized attention, and the opportunity to catch the fish of a lifetime. And with the speed of these boats we’ll be to the fishing grounds as fast as possible providing the maximum amount of fishing time for the day.

Just like the battle between Orion and Scorpio, it’s always exciting to see which of the boats won the battle for the biggest fish of the day.

Every Halibut Counts

Did you know that it is estimated that nearly 50% of all the halibut caught in Alaska are released? This is due to either regulation requirements or due to angler preference. Without a doubt a certain number of these released halibut will die. Good fishing practices and ethical fishing help ensure this precious resource will be there for the future.

Homer Halibut Hunters is proud to be great stewards in this regard and following best practices such as minimal handling, gentle care of fish that are planned to be released, never lifting a fish solely by the tail, releasing fish in the water and more. If you want to learn more about how we can all enjoy this amazing sport fishery while protecting it for our children, grandchildren, and beyond, read more about the Every Halibut Counts program.

Release A Monster!

Did you also know that most male halibut rarely reach 36″ which is about 21 lbs. This means that almost any halibut weighing more than 21 lbs is most likely a female. Certainly any of the 40+ lb fish or larger we catch on every trip are females. And, the bigger they are, the more eggs they produce. A 50 lb female, which is around 4 feet in length, will lay around 500,000 eggs annually. A 250 lb halibut is estimated to lay nearly 4 million eggs annually! That sounds great to us! So, we’ve created our Release A Monster Program!

As a way of saying thank you for helping us to protect this amazing fishery, anyone releasing a 250 lb halibut or larger receives their fishing trip for that day free of charge!
